The Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14–15, 1912, after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. There were an estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, and more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time of her sinking. She was 882 feet long and 108 feet wide, and had a gross tonnage of 46,328 tons. She was powered by three reciprocating steam engines and one low-pressure turbine, which gave her a top speed of 23 knots (43 km/h). The Titanic was equipped with the latest safety features, including watertight compartments and lifeboats. However, these features were not enough to prevent her from sinking after she struck an iceberg.

The Titanic was a luxury liner, and her interior was designed to impress. The ship had a grand staircase, a smoking room, a dining room, and a library. There were also private suites for first-class passengers, which included such amenities as private bathrooms and sitting rooms.

The Titanic was a popular ship, and tickets for her maiden voyage were sold out months in advance. Passengers from all over the world boarded the ship, eager to experience the luxury and excitement of transatlantic travel. However, the Titanic's voyage ended in tragedy, and the ship sank just hours after striking an iceberg.

What Caused The Titanic To Sink?

The Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912. The iceberg tore a 300-foot gash in the ship's hull, which caused five of her watertight compartments to flood. The Titanic's design meant that she could stay afloat with up to four of her watertight compartments flooded, but the damage from the iceberg was too extensive.

The Titanic began to sink slowly, and passengers and crew were evacuated into lifeboats. However, there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board, and more than 1,500 people died.

The Legacy Of The Titanic

The sinking of the Titanic was a tragedy that shocked the world. It led to new regulations for passenger ships, and it inspired countless books, movies, and documentaries. The Titanic is still remembered today as one of the most famous ships in history.
