Early Life and Career

Samuel Gompers was born in London, England, in 1850. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old. Gompers began working at a young age, and he quickly became involved in the labor movement. In 1881, he helped to found the American Federation of Labor (AFL),which became the largest labor organization in the United States.

Leadership of the AFL

As president of the AFL, Gompers led the fight for a number of important workers' rights, including the eight-hour workday, the minimum wage, and the right to collective bargaining. He also opposed child labor and immigration restrictions. Gompers' leadership of the AFL was instrumental in transforming the labor movement into a major force in American politics.
