In his book Heroic Journey to Liberation: Manhood and America, author John Eldredge explores the seven stages of the heroic journey, and how they can help us to become the men we were meant to be.
Eldredge argues that every man has a deep-seated longing for adventure, purpose, and meaning. This longing is what drives us to seek out challenges, to push ourselves to our limits, and to make a difference in the world.
The heroic journey is a roadmap for this longing. It is a journey that takes us from our ordinary world into the realm of the extraordinary, and back again. Along the way, we face challenges, learn from our mistakes, and grow into the men we were meant to be.
Eldredge identifies seven stages of the heroic journey:
- The Call to Adventure: This is the moment when we first recognize our longing for adventure and purpose. We may feel restless, dissatisfied, or even bored with our current life. This is the call to break out of our comfort zone and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
- Refusal of the Call: When we first hear the call to adventure, we may be tempted to refuse. We may be afraid of the unknown, or we may not believe that we are capable of achieving our goals. However, if we refuse the call, we will remain stuck in our ordinary world, and we will never reach our full potential.
- Supernatural Aid: Once we have accepted the call to adventure, we may receive help from unexpected sources. This help may come in the form of a mentor, a friend, or even a divine being. This supernatural aid will help us to overcome the challenges we face on our journey.
- The Road of Trials: The road of trials is the path that we must travel to reach our goal. Along the way, we will face many challenges, both internal and external. These challenges will test our strength, our courage, and our commitment to our journey. However, if we persevere, we will emerge from these trials stronger and wiser.
- The Approach to the Inmost Cave: The inmost cave is the place where we confront our deepest fears and insecurities. This is the point of no return, and we must be willing to face our darkness if we want to continue on our journey. If we can overcome our fears, we will be reborn as a new man.
- The Ordeal: The ordeal is the final challenge that we must face on our journey. This is the moment when we must put everything on the line to achieve our goal. The ordeal may be physical, emotional, or spiritual. However, if we can overcome this challenge, we will emerge from it victorious.
- The Reward: After we have overcome the ordeal, we will receive the reward. This reward may be material, but it is more likely to be something intangible, such as a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, or peace. The reward is the culmination of our journey, and it is what makes all the challenges we have faced worthwhile.
The heroic journey is not an easy one, but it is a journey that is worth taking. It is a journey that will lead us to a life of purpose, fulfillment, and meaning.
If you are a man who is looking for more out of life, then I encourage you to read Heroic Journey to Liberation: Manhood and America. This book will help you to understand your longing for adventure and purpose, and it will give you the tools you need to embark on your own heroic journey.
