In 2002, American journalist and author Judy Lash Balint moved to Jerusalem with her husband and two young children. She had come to the Holy City to cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but she soon found herself drawn into the lives of the people who lived there.

Over the next seven years, Balint lived in a variety of neighborhoods in Jerusalem, from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Mea Shearim to the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.
